Successful Heritage Day at Windmill De Vlieger

This Heritage Day marked the first open day of the milling season at Molen De Vlieger. On Saturday, April 11, interested visitors could visit both the mill and the stall in Herenstraat. Under a crisp spring sun, visitors of all ages flocked to experience the historic, over 400-year-old polder mill up close. In Herenstraat, children could unleash their creativity by painting old mill sails. The acrylic paint was sponsored by Brugman Art.

There was no shortage of interest. Volunteers guided many visitors around the mill museum. They spoke enthusiastically about the rich history and the technical ingenuity behind this centuries-old structure. The mill’s interior, with its wooden gears and rotating shafts, fascinated many. But outside, on the mill yard, the explanation regarding the drainage of the polder using the scoop wheel was also followed with interest.

The open day offered not only a glimpse into the past but also emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, the mill remains accessible to the public and knowledge is passed on to new generations.
